Thriller in the opening match results in tie
In a thrilling first match of the deaf handball EC Germany and Russia played 27:27 (11:11). The host team owned their point in big parts to goalkeeper Hendrik Mitschke who held two penalty shots and lots of free throws.
For the Russian team back player Murat Chomaev was the strongest player. His last goal could was equalized by the German team only seconds before the end of the match.
The first part of the match was clearly among the goalies. Hendrik Mitschke on the German team and Stanislav Surovskii for the Russians were hard to overcome within the first five minutes. When Felix Werling made the first point the DGS team managed to get ahead to 6:3 and forced the Russian coach to take his first time-out.
Afterwards Ivan Belyaev’s team clearly upgraded their defence and found its way back into the match. Germany could hardly find any gaps and suffered from bad passes. If Mitschke hadn’t continued to show his best side Russia would have taken the lead within the first 30 minutes.
Only 20 seconds before half-time Murat Chomaev scored the 11:10 for the Russian Federation from the far left. But thanks to Sebastian Klein this wasn’t the half-time result. Klein managed to hit home a direct free throw.
The match continued to be thrilling in the second half. At no point any one of the teams led with more than one goal. If the Germans scored there was an immediate counter. Whenever the Russian defence blocked Mitschke prevented his team from falling back further.
Both teams showed high risk propensity. The Russians playing short took out their goalkeeper and Germany dared throwing across half the court to score.
The end of the match mirrored the end of the first half: the outstanding player Chomaev scored the 27:26 lead with his twelfth goal only 20 seconds before the end. But instead of hanging their heads in the face of a possible defeat the DGS-team gave it their all and was rewarded with a tie, scored by Felix Werling only three seconds before the end.
